Time has flown by so quickly that I didn’t even realize that my favorite yoga studio is celebrating its three year anniversary!
It was a little more than three years ago when it was still under construction and I was having dinner next door at Mona Lisa. It looked like the studio was going to be opening pretty soon, so I excused myself to use the lavatory, because I wanted to sneak a peek at the soon to be Bikram Studio that was opening in my hood.
Inside, I found manager, Mark, whom I later learned was Ginger’s fiancee. Ginger was one of the teachers. (They own and manage the studio together-making a pretty great team.) I also met one of the teachers, Omar, who reminded me of some of my friends back home. (probably because he was American?) I inquired as to when they were opening, asked a lot of other questions, (since I had only attended one other Bikram class in my life) and told them I would definitely be one of their regulars once classes began.
Three years later, I still enjoy my love affair with the “Hot Room.” What makes it even more enjoyable to go to Ginger’s studio is the sense of community that I know Ginger nurtures. We have developed a friendship over the past three years, and I can appreciate the environment that she has created for Bikram practitioners. This is why it is no surprise to me that Ginger continues to provide opportunities for her students (and for everyone in the area) to give back to the community we live in. Ginger believes that “Yoga is something we can do together for an even greater purpose,” and she backs that belief up with her anniversary charity event every year.
This coming Saturday, October 26th, together with ATC, Team Asia, Unilab, Certified Calm, Global Academy and Lightwater, BYA will hold their annual charity event. This year’s beneficiary will be “My Dream in a Shoebox.”
My Dream in a Shoebox is a joint CSR initiative between IBPAP and Team Asia. Every year, they collect shoeboxes during the holidays which contain school supplies for Filipino children. They also help provide funding which helps build public schools all over the country.
BYA will hold this special yoga class for anyone who would is interested in joining them in their cause. All you have to do is show up ready to give back. Registration begins at 9:30 am. Bring your shoebox filled with school supplies for one child as your pass to attend the class. (You can also make a cash donation on the spot as well.) Bring your mat. Bring your water. Bring a friend. Bring your heart and share the love.
