Best Buddies Special Needs

Exceptional Sports Philippines

There are so many reasons I enjoy what I do with Best Buddies Philippines. Of course, the biggest reason that I love what I do has to do with the smiles that I see when my Buddies love participating in an activity that we have mounted for them. I also enjoy the camaraderie that I see nurtured through our activities. Other times I am honored to be part of the friendships that have lasting impressions on both parties involved when a great match has been made. And still other times, I realize just how much our community of helpers and advocates is growing, because I get to meet people like Paolo, from Exceptional Sports Philippines.

Paolo and his partner Janett saw the need for children to have a safe place to play. They saw and understood the benefits that were enjoyed by kids with exceptyional abilities when they participated in a combination of football, basketball, fitness, and even martial arts. With this combined athletic approach to coaching children of all abilities, they provide a safe and open atmosphere for kids to come, play, and feel included without the added pressure of performing.

In essence, they meet the child where he/she is in skill and ability without compromising safety and instruction.

As E-Sports evolved, they took their growth and commitment to providing fun and fitness for all abilities by establishing a foundation to raise funds, find committed partners, and scale on impact.

Now, I’m not quite sure if they have actually partnered with our sister organization, Special Olympics yet, but I know it is within their reach to supplement or compliment the sports training that these athletes need in a real and sustainable way.

They do this by training the kids that vary in ages from 5 years old and up, with one on one coaching, that not only inspires and empowers the athletes, but also provides an opportunity for the kids to step outside their comfort zone.

As Anne Chua, mom of Issaac, shares “Not even being a doctor prepares you for your journey as a parent of a child with special needs. When you are handed a diagnosis, it doesn’t end there. In fact, it’s a process where you look for the right treatment or activities for your son, knowing that a special needs certificate or degree will not determine the connections that any coach can have with my son.”

As a parent, I not only appreciate the honesty with which Anne shared parts of herself during the launch of E-Sports, I also appreciated that her kids were there to show me just how much they enjoy the program too.

As a Country Director, I appreciate what Paolo shared when we opened up the table to questions and answers. “I wanna do something that I enjoy, and that makes a difference to people who need it.” His sense of idealism reminded me of myself when I graduated college armed with my teaching degree and wanted to make a difference in the lives of children, hoping to change the world “one student at a time.”

I think that other people can see the passion and purpose behind Exceptional Sports desire to make fitness and fun accessible to all.

Some of the past and present BPI Sinag Finalists products are: Kwaderno, First Harvest, and Auro

This year, as part of BPI Foundation’s, Sinag awards, 20 different foundations will be competing for the opportunity to scale up their impact and their socially based entrepreunial businesses.

Exceptional Sports is part of that prestige list of business that benefited from BPI FOUNDATION benefiting from workshops , mentors and training in the form of experienced professionals sharing tricks and tools of the trade by honing each business’ intellectual, social, and financial capital.

Here are a list of all of the other businesses that are vying for funding:
Auro Chocolate by FODC, Inc
Bambuhay
Bila Rural Development Club
Calaboo Dairyland Inc.
Carboncycle Processing Inc.
Cocoasenso Corp.
Edaya Cordillera

Now, I’m not only looking forward to seeing E-Sports take home the coveted cash prize that will enable Paolo and Janett to expand their reach, I am also looking forward to seeing Paolo in action with my Buddies.

But, I will tell you all about that in another post 🙂

Stay tuned for an update on our exciting partnership with Mutya ng Pilipinas!

Sunset @anisiambeachhouse was the perfect way to w Sunset @anisiambeachhouse was the perfect way to welcome the parents back to Manila when they arrived in July.

This small resort is perfect for divers who move around in a small group. Everything in the beach house is set for hanging out and enjoying your friends and family.

The chef prepares meals that are Thai inspired and the staff is warm and accommodating. Kids loved the Nintendo Switch and board games too. Aircon was super strong in our room and the views were beautiful. I loved that we had the whole beach house to ourselves because it just felt safer.

I really miss the beach. It’s one of my happy places. Where are you favorite places to drive to for a weekend getaway?

Asking for a friend….
Hahahahaha.
@gelliaventajado is still super excited to go to s @gelliaventajado is still super excited to go to school everyday. She comes home completely exhausted and falls asleep before her 2pm socialization class on zoom. Can’t wait for her to adjust and for everyone to settle in the groove of the new school year.

Especially since she has yummies from @yaya.lola and a new backpack and lunchbox from @herschelsupply!

And truth be told, I really don’t have a favorite. ✌🏻

Mommas need time alone too. So much of what I do Mommas need time alone too.

So much of what I do is for everyone else around me. For the kids. For Nino. For my extended family and friends.

But I need time for myself too.
This is vital for self awareness, self reflection, and self improvement.

This means quiet time with verse, which admittedly I have not had much time for. It also means making time to find my way back to the mat to practice yoga. It also means time to listen to to music which soothes my soul and often provides ways for me to tune into how I’m feeling. If The Lord makes ways, it also means short trips where I can reconnect with family and girlfriends or opportunities for retreats too.

Funny thing is, it took me to reach middle age to understand how important this for my human-ness.

The most recent trip and time spent with my cousin @tricciaramos was eye opening. She has a retreat coming up in Sedona next month. I’m hoping to attend, but still figuring out how I can make it. I know it will be incredibly restorative and healing.

It’s early evening in NY. So that means it’s s It’s early evening in NY. So that means it’s still our anniversary on the east coast.

At this time, 24 years ago, we were walking into our reception. Our first dance was, It had to be You. Our second dance was For You, by Kenny Lattimore.

We have come a long way since then. It’s hasn’t been easy, but we have had wonderful guides by our side to help keep it together. Thankful for all the lessons in love, and the beautiful children God has given us.

Happy Double Dozen @manila.gent.

But who are we kidding? Snacks for the movies absolutely does not have to be healthy. 👆🏻

Easy to order snacks for the beach, a movie board and more with the click of a button.

Thanks @benbymart for helping make the Movie Munchies episode so much fun!

If you are like me, you send a lot.

😂😳😅

In this photo is our oldest @yumboxph and our newest Yumbox. Our first #Yumbox was purchased almost 7 years ago. @kayecatral hand carried the Panino home for @gelliaventajado and we still use it today.

The #Yumboxph Presto is the newest in the lunchbox line up and it’s perfect for my girl who is Uber concerned with #sustainableliving and #sustainable #choices.

What’s in her Yumbox?

For brekkie in the car:
Truffled Egg salad on sourdough loaf from @lartizan. Banana with peanut butter. Tangerine. And @hersheys kisses.

For lunch: leftovers from @mangotreemanila which include grilled pork belly, pandan chicken, prawn pomelo salad, and red curry.

Lunchbox notes I kept from @expomom @mommymundo because it’s extra. And a @starbucks cheese latte.

Wanna know more about these lunchboxes that each member of #TeamGellibean uses when the go to school and work?

Tune in tomorrow @kitchen143 at 4pm on the @rappler and @mommanmanila Facebook pages to learn more about all the brands we love for #BackToSchool.
