It seems like only recently that I have been noticing my thinning hair. I gave birth to Evangelina over three years ago, and since then, I’m not sure if it’s my age, my diet, or just the way I’m built that I feel like my scalp and thinning hair has definitely seen better days.
I can recall having this conversation many years ago with Nino. We were talking about hair and how he knew a girl would be interested in him if she did the hair “flip.” You know the hair flip I’m talking about?
It’s something that is so subconscious, but I realized in my recent talk with Svenson’s Chief Trichologist, Michael Bernstein, that a woman’s hair has so much to do with her sexuality and her sensuality. Aside from that, our hair is a great barometer of just how healthy we are. If there is a symptom or another problem within your body, you will see it in the condition of your hair.
There are quite a few reasons that would contribute to hair loss. I have always been aware of the hair loss that occurs after I have given birth. It usually happened to me when my newborn baby would just about be ready to roll over. With my three big kids this happened at about three to four months after birth. I think Gelli rolled over a little later, but the hair fall started for me at about 3-4 months after giving birth as well. Hair loss in this situation is due to the flushing of the hormones. Your body is letting go of all the extra hormones after pregnancy and with it, comes that extra hair loss. Usually, the hair grows back, but in my case, I have noticed a definite thinning as I have gotten older so this was one of the concerns I brought up to Michael.
Michael Bernstein is the Chief Trichologist at Svenson and in during an intimate meet up that my friend Janice arranged for us, we were able to learn more about hair loss, the reasons behind hair loss, and how to prevent premature hair loss.

There is nothing like learning the ins and outs of something with an expert. Thank you Michael for taking the time to explain and address the misconceptions I had about hairloss.
Michael caters to the stars of Hollywood and some very well known high profile people even here in Manila. He went onto explain that if there is something terribly wrong with my health, that that will be seen through hair loss or shine as well. Here are some more factors that can affect hair loss
- Anemia
- Thyroid problems
- CRASH DIETS!!!!
- Emotional trauma
- Hormonal imbalances (are your periods regular?)
- Stress
- Hair straightening
Aside from my concern with hair loss, I have noticed that as I have gotten older, I need to make sure I shampoo my hair every day because it gets so oily. Also, if I don’t use the correct shampoo, I even get that oily build up and need to use a clarifying shampoo to clean it up.

Ms. Shy examined my scalp and hair follicles providing me an analysis that would help me decide on a course of treatment.
During our little get together, I was so relieved that Janice and her hubby Gary were there to also ask some questions related to hair loss. It’s always good to get another perspective because there might be other concerns that you didn’t think about. Long time Svenson clients Gina Quillamor and Chico Garcia shared how much they enjoy their hair and scalp treatments and look forward to it as their “me time.” It’s a time for them to relax in the chair and they even likened it to how a woman might feel going to the salon but with added benefits. Both of these guys were noticing thinning hair despite only being in their 20’s and 30’s. Hair loss worried them and with the help of Svenson they feel that they have addressed the possibilities of early hair loss with the deep cleansing scalp prevention program.
I was able to try out a deep cleansing treatment for myself and they were definitely spot on. I felt like I was in a relaxing chair for my “me time.” Even the cubicles that we are seated in, are designed for the utmost privacy. Before trying out the treatment, my scalp and hair was assessed by Miss Shy. She used this super scalp magnifier that she just brushed along the scalp and the hair line to see how healthy my scalp was. I had told her that I use a dandruff shampoo so we were on the look out for the pesky symptoms of dry scalp. Ms. Shy did confirm that I have dandruff, but she also said that I have some waxy build up at the roots of my hair follicles. I thought right away that that would explain why my hair gets so greasy so quickly. She recommended I commit to a treatment three times a week for two weeks to remove any of the extra build up and get me back on the right track to taking care of a healthy scalp and hair.
Ms. Shy took me to the treatment area which was quiet and private. I noticed that each attendant had their own client to take care of and if you didn’t feel like being social, you didn’t have to be. We started with a lotion that Jenny applied to my scalp for a scrub.

This was the first tool that was used to help bring my scalp to a healthier condition. It cleaned and scraped away all the extra oil and wax that Ms. Shy saw in her analysis.
After applying the lotion she used the Scalp Master Scrub to remove debris and dead skin that might be sitting on the scalp inhibiting hair growth.

Jenny was really helpful in explaining every step of the process to me so that I fully understood what was happening.
After that, Jenny applied a dry shampoo which was was massaged into my scalp and hair with the a scalp massager called the Mariatti. (I seriously need one of those at home. I think I could put myself to sleep using it on my head.)
After the massage, it was time for a wash WITH SUPER COLD WATER. Jenny reiterated what Michael had said earlier (because I asked again) about taking a shower with very hot water. When we wash our hair….we should only be using cold water! This means I’m forever doomed because I LOVE my hot showers 🙁
Once my hair was clean Jenny applied a a cleanser that kind of smelled like alcohol, only it wasn’t alcohol because that would be very bad for your hair! IT was super cold and super minty. If I was getting sleepy because I needed an afternoon coffee the cool sensation after this was applied to my scalp woke me right up! I liked it because it felt refreshing.
Next the corrective lotion was applied. This addresses the dandruff and my main concern which was falling hair. Soon after that was applied Jenny used the iontophoresis machine. This is an ionizing treatment for the scalp. It balances the scalp and hair follicles to prepare for healthy hair.
Gino and Chico were right. I felt super relaxed, and could feel a difference in the condition of my scalp and hair in the succeeding days. It was like a trip to the salon where I felt like I was doing some healthy goodness for my hair because it really felt “clean.” I also learned that there is a Svenson and Marie France office right here in Alabang. This will make it easy for me when I decide to go for succeeding treatments and maintenance.

My hair and scalp looked and FELT so much cleaner and healthier than when I walked in just hours before.
