Pimples come and go.
Sometimes they come back quite often. As the mom of a teenager, I have been tasked to help make some of these unwanted visitors disappear. I remember how it was to be a teenager, how hard it was to deal with peer pressure, bad skin, and feeling insecure about my appearance due to unwanted breakouts.
You have heard of the saying “You feel good when you look good?” Not saying that how you LOOK should ALWAYS determine how you feel about yourself…but if you think about it, you know you feel just a little bit better when you are confident in the skin you are in.
Having skin blemishes, pimples, and even scarring from pimples, can put a damper on how your teen (heck even you-if you have adult acne) feels when going out into the world. Sometimes, your teen might even feel like bad skin can hold them back.

In a recent study, it was found that teens who were prone to acne were more likely to develop a poor self image and low self esteem.
How do we help our kids “Face Up” to these unwanted blemishes? First, it’s important to educate our kids on what causes pimples…knowing what to avoid or what to do in order to protect our children from breakouts.
- Drink water. Lots of it. Every day.
- “You are what you eat.” This means: Stay away from junk food! It’s not good for your body…or for your skin. In general you should try to eat lots of GLOW foods (fruits and veggies) because in essence…they help your skin “glow.”
- Sleep. Getting the right amount of sleep is essential to healthy skin.
- Exercise regularly.
- Do NOT squeeze any pimples or black heads. (ever, ever, evahhh…)
- Practice Healthy Habits. Just like we teach our children to wash their hands with soap after using the toilet, before eating, and after coming home from school, we also need to reinforce the idea that washing their face 2x a day is important to stave off acne causing bacteria.
This is where Safeguard Derma Sense can help.

Dermasense comes in both a bar and liquid soap form and is an affordable choice in fighting acne and cleansing sensitive skin. Click on the picture to be taken to the official Safeguard website.
While Safeguard has always been an antibacterial soap that many families have trusted, the original formula is not something I would let Gia use on her face. Face soap is meant to be gentle enough that it will keep your skin clean, but not too harsh that it would leave your skin dry.
The NEW Derma Sense line was specially formulated to address the skin issues caused by adolescent hormonal surges, oily skin, and bacteria. With two different formulas; one for sensitive skin, and one for acne prone skin Derma Sense has visibly improved the appearance of skin in 89% of its daily users.
Safeguard launched their Dermasense line last month, complete with an onstage musical at The PETA Theater called Hashtag: Pimples Anonymous.
I really thought the musical was a cute and original way to depict what many teens go through on a daily basis, if they are affected by acne. But, if you take seriously what they were able to present in this fun and rhythmic way, then you know and understand the depressing effects of how bad skin affects teenagers.

Panelists who answered questions in an open forum after the show: (Left to Right) Maro Torres (Brand Manager, Safeguard), Dr. Marie Pilar Lagdameo-Leuenberger (Fellow of The Philippine Dermatological Society), Dr. Susana A. Estanislao (Counseling Psychologist, De La Salle University Manila), and Jenni Epperson (Celebrity Stylist, Award-Winning Lifestyle Blogger).
Acne can affect any one at any age. However, the stress of constant breakouts in teens can affect self esteem and in extreme cases may even cause depression. As parents, we influence our children by modeling healthy habits and fostering healthy attitudes . Empowering your teen to #Faceup to acne with confidence, is easy when neutralizing acne causing bacteria with by washing with Safeguard Derma Sense twice daily.
Safeguard Derma Sense is available in most leading supermarkets and drugstores.

Thank you Safeguard for inviting me to the launch of the Derma Sense line and for reminding me just how difficult adolescence can be. Being a better parent can sometimes mean something as simple as buying the right soap to help boost your child’s confidence through clear skin.
