Start 2025 on a good note with bigger goals and better habits to build. The new year presents an opportunity to grow as an individual and improve our lives in many ways. This includes even the simplest of momma duties, such as looking after the needs of the household and grocery shopping. Shopping for the home is essential in maintaining comfort and order, whether you live alone or take care of the whole family.
As prices of goods continue to rise, it may feel like it’s near impossible to get “better” at grocery shopping. Don’t lose hope! The new year is a chance for all of us to hit the reset button!
Here are 7 household shopping tips to start 2025 on a good note:
Always Shop With a List
Grocery shopping is pretty straightforward. However, it can quickly lead to costly mistakes if you are unprepared. Before heading out for a grocery run, take stock of what you already have and what needs to be replenished. This simple check in will let you know which items you can skip and thus save money. You can also try meal planning to get a better sense of which products to buy and how much these would cost.
Of course, your effort of cataloging your home’s cupboards, fridge, and pantry will be put to waste if you don’t follow your list. Make an effort to stick to your grocery list so you don’t end up spending unnecessarily.
Take Advantage of Membership Shopping and Rewards
Instead of shopping at the usual supermarkets, consider applying for a membership at big-box superstores. While membership shopping requires an annual fee, this upfront payment usually pays for itself in the form of benefits not found in regular supermarket rewards programs. Some common membership benefits include discounts during promotional events, savings on fuel from partner stations, and free products and services.
With some membership programs, like the Landers promo credit card, you can also earn cashback points even for qualified transactions made outside the store, which means you can get savings everywhere you use it.
Additionally, shopping at superstores expands options beyond what most grocery stores carry, so it’s easy to discover other brands that provide high quality at competitive price points.
Buy in Bulk When Possible
Certain pantry items like pasta, grains, dried beans, and spices, and home essentials like toilet paper, garbage bags, and soap can be bought in bulk and stored for future use. Compared to buying individual items, I buy these items in bulk because it’s instant savings. Plus, buying in bulk saves on fuel by making fewer trips to the store.
But, before I buy anything in bulk, I take note of the expiration or best before date just to be sure I’ll be able to use the items before they expire. I
Don’t Shop Hungry
I know that how I feel when I go shopping affects my buying decisions. This is especially true if I’m hungry! Heading to the supermarket on an empty stomach can lead to a shopping cart filled with unhealthy snacks and unnecessary purchases. So, before going to the grocery store, I make sure to eat a filling meal or at least have a snack first because it minimizes the chance that I’ll pick up anything extra from the snack aisle.
Read Product Labels
As a consumer, I wouldn’t just go to the store and pick up the first thing I see, especially if I’m shopping for #TeamGellibean. Buying smarter means learning about ingredients and harmful substances that I want to avoid. Some products also have ingredients that inflate the price but that higher price tag does not reflect in nutrients.
I make it a habit to read ingredients and labels, especially with food and skin care items. Because my kids have allergies, I have to be careful with their sensitivities.
Shop Generic Brands
So many of us fall into the trap of being \ loyal to a particular brand that we dismiss options which may be just as good or even better than our favorites. This year, I intend to challenge myself to look into generic equivalents of our household staples. Some private label items might appear to be hit-and-miss, it definitely pays to test what’s out there. Especially if there are worthy alternatives that could replace an expensive name-brand essential.
Compare Store Prices
It should go without saying that getting the most bang for your buck involves research and comparison. Hence, shopping around should be part of anyone’s agenda when you head out for a grocery trip. Observe how different stores have varying prices for the same products and shop at the ones that have the best deals. Just be mindful, however, of whether traveling for miles to a store that offers lower rates could end up costing you more than simply going to a nearby supermarket despite its slightly higher prices.
It’s easy to take something as basic as grocery shopping for granted, but it’s these routine tasks that often times, make for a happy household. If your new year’s resolution is to be a wise shopper for your family, these practical choices and reasonable adjustments will certainly make for a more cost-effective 2025 and beyond.
