As a mother, I can only hope that the values and principles I deem important reach my children in a way that they will live by them even after their own children have made an entrance into this world. I understand that my legacy in this lifetime really IS my children, and I suppose that’s why I consider motherhood the most important job I have. As a mother, I know I am shaping the future with what I teach my children, how I raise them, how much they contribute to the greater good of society, and that’s the legacy which I will pass on.

Executive Chef Eric Costille and French Chef Bettina Arguelles explain the dishes which will be featured this Mother’s Day in Spiral, their inspiration, country of origin, and the significance for each of their employees who agreed to share their heirloom recipes.
This Mother’s Day, Sofitel is honoring the legacy that has been passed on by mothers all over the world in sharing recipes of 9 valued employees, inherited from their mothers and grandmothers. This tribute to motherhood, made with love, is the basis of A Mother’s Day Legacy at Sofitel Philippine Plaza, Manila.

Caleb Han, Poolside Restaurant Manager, shared the story behind his Korean recipes from his mother, grandmother, and great grandmother. I was intrigued by the rice cooked in a bamboo case and wanted to learn more. Through our discussion he explained how special these dishes are to him.
Special dishes will be served in Spiral and the nostalgia of mom’s good ole home cooking cannot be denied.
Sofitel’s Mother’s Day celebration, will begin on the evening of May tenth and continue through the week. What I like most about this week long celebration is that it is done in partnership with the provincial government of Ilocos Norte, well known embroidery experts Bergamo, and the basket weaving skills of S.C. Vizcarra. Traditions like these, as we all know, are often passed on through the generations of women who perfect the intricate and delicate works of art through fabric and weaving.

If you decide to take advantage of the special Mother’s Day “staycation” rates and treat Mom to a little break, or even if you just bring the family out for brunch at Spiral onMother’s Day, know in advance that you will enjoy the rich culture brought to the table not just through the 21 ateliers, but with other special events, displays, and workshops set up through out Spiral. Simply checking in for a staycation during the weekend of Mother’s Day will treat Mom to a three strand freshwater pearl bracelet!
Spiral will showcase the beautiful handwoven Abel Iloco fabric from Ilocos Norte, in a fashion line designed by Ryan Madamba which gives the “traditional fabric a modern twist through a resort and evening collection” on Tuesday May thirteenth. If diners would like to view the intricate work that the weavers and embroiders do, they can explore the workshops and displays strategically nestled throughout the dining area.
But really, one of the most interesting stories which hit home for me was the story of the “Dragon Lady.” Editha Aguinaldo-Dacuycuy was awarded the most outstanding commercial crop by the Philippine government in 2001. She began cultivating Dragon Fruit which is rich in fiber, vitamins, and minerals for her daughter who has cerebral palsy. Her love for her daughter led her to cultivate the first organic (award winning) dragon fruit plantation in the Northern Philippines.

There is not much a mother wouldn’t do if she thinks it will help her child. Editha’s love of her daughter led her to some of the products featured this upcoming week. She also makes dragon fruit cookies and wine.
Sofitel will take the opportunity during the special fashion show to honor mothers who have made their mark in their respective fields and raise families of their own. Mothers in attendance for the fashion show will have the opportunity to win prizes from Jewelmer and L’Oreal Paris and other guests will have the opportunity to win prizes from Estee Lauder.

Chanel proudly models the “Philippine tweed” strapless gown, an original design by Ryan Madamba. It’s no surprise that Ryan comes from Ilocos Norte when you realize he has incorporated the work from the traditional weavers which dates back as far as 1572.
After enjoying a filling lunch from Spiral and learning more about the dishes that will be featured as early as this coming Saturday, the SoMoms were surprised with a special flower arranging workshop by Sofitel’s in house Botanical Specialist, Larry Pagsanjan.

For many mothers, it isn’t a celebration without flowers. Floral designer shares his creativity with the attendees. No need to wait for someone to bring you flowers! You can make your own arrangements with a little guidance from experts like Larry Pagsanjan. Larry is Sofitel’s resident botanical specialist. His works of art can be seen all through out the hotel every day and on special occasions.
I think we did a great job! What do you think?
